FAQ

What is downloadable music?

Instead of going to a record store and buying a CD the magic of the internet lets you go online and buy single tracks of music that you can download to your computer and transfer to your portable music player.  All of the sites we cover are legal in that they have negotiated with the record labels and made sure the right copyright and royalty issues are taken care of.

How did you get the idea for this site?

We believe that people should be paid for their work and artist’s rights to their work are no different.  When legal downloads started we thought it was great except that it often took a lot of searching to find a song.  As more and more sites started popping up, it took longer and longer to find songs.  If one site did not have it then time had to be spent going to another and another.  Sometimes the song was not anywhere- how frustrating!  It was at these times that personally I would sit and think, “I would pay if someone could tell me a song I wanted was available for legal download, it would save so much time.”

Can I listen to tracks before I buy them?

Yes, most sites allow you to preview songs before buying them!  So you can search for the song using our search engine and then go to the site and listen to it before deciding whether or not to buy it.

How do I sign up?

It is easy, just click here and get started.  We do not need a lot of information, it is quick and painless.

Aren’t you like KaZaa and other peer to peer sites?

No, we do not own or control any of the music nor do we condone or authorize the swapping of music that does not recognize the rights of the people who own the music.  We simply tell users which of the legal download sites have the music they are looking for.

You do not currently have a music site I like in your database, when will you add it?

We are always evaluating which sites to add next, let us know which one you would like and we will put it on our list.  When we do add new sites we will definitely let you know!

Your database does not show that the song I am looking for is available for download, does that mean I cannot get it anywhere online legally?

No, it means that it does not exist in the song database we have compiled for the music sites that we cover.  It is possible that it is available on a site we do not cover.  Also, the music websites add new tracks to their libraries all the time.  We update our database continuously so check back every now and then, the track you want may become available.

How do I pay?

We accept credit card payment for your ordered Tracklisting.

Why don’t you have iTunes in your database?

Since Apple has not licensed its music format Fairplay (see more about this in OMG’s Online Music Primer) iTunes is the only site where iPod and Mac owners can go to get music.  OMG’s service helps cut through the clutter and make it easier to find the music you want on the various music sites.  But in Apple’s case there is only one site so you do not need OMG’s service, just log onto iTunes and use their search engine.  FYI this is also currently the case for Sony’s Connect music site so we do not include them either.

Why are we doing this and how does it work?

Our mission is to save you time, money and help you find the music you want with as little fuss as possible.  Right now there are literally dozens of music sites out there saying they have the best collection and the best prices.  The reality is that some are better than others and selections vary greatly.  Who wants to search a dozen sites to try and find the song they want?  Why not let us do it for you?  We have created a continually updated database that keeps track of the songs on major music sites like Musicmatch, MSN, and Virgin (for a complete list click here).  Just type in the song or artist you are looking for and within seconds we will tell you if the song is available, what price it is and where you can get it.  In fact, in most cases we will provide a link that will take you right there.  All this for nine cents or less per search.

So I found the song, now how do I buy music from the online music sites?

There are various ways.  Some let you buy it through their online website, others require you to download their music player to access their library of songs.  Not to worry though, all of these are free and they do help with the download process.

Some sites will require you to sign up for a membership before they allow you to download.  In many instances, our link will take you directly to the site with the song you want.  If you want to purchase it then you will have to either a) download their player b) sign up for an account or both.  Signing up for an account is simple, just provide your name and some other information and your credit card.  They will give you a password and login and from then on you are good to go.  Shopping for songs is like any other e-commerce site with shopping baskets and the like.
